The McDonough Business Strategy Challenge (MBSC) is unique among case competitions. Instead of drawing cases from for-profit companies, the MBSC presents cases from non-profits with 501(c) 3 status who will implement the team’s recommendation after the competition. This provides participants with the distinct challenge and opportunity to solve real problems faced by major non-profit organizations today.

Originally founded by the Hilltop Consultants in 2005, the McDonough Business Strategy Challenge has grown into a highly respected case competition organized by the McDonough School of Business. Each year over 20 talented teams from the top-ranked business schools around the world, as well as support from major consulting firms travel to Washington DC for the annual challenge.



The MBSC's unique approach presents exciting new problems to competitors.


With limited resources, different legal requirements, and no profit incentives, non-profit organizations challenge competitors to develop creative solutions to tough business problems. The MBSC also rewards its competitors with the knowledge that their work will serve communities worldwide, as their ideas will be implemented and help shape the future direction of the client organizations.
